about

Slightly paranoid and a little naïve, “Trouble on the Ground” is about abuse of power and the role of people in conflict. I cannot imagine the lives of people surrounded by war. Even though this song was written nearly ten years ago, it is an enduring theme being lived out by Syrians, Iraqis and innocent people in far-flung places. At the risk of sounding patriotic–I’ve never been a flag-waver–we are blessed to have a government and military looking out for us 24/7.

Though I often disagree with American politics, especially foreign policy, I appreciate that we’ve carved out a safe haven for ourselves. Consequently, that safety may very well come at the expense of folks in those same far-flung places. The bottom line is this: the world has become too small for nationalism. We are globally connected and economically dependent on each other. It’s not nukes that will prevent WWIII, but commerce. Unfortunately for little people, leaders will likely play 20th century politics well into the 21st century.

lyrics

If you think you’re running now
You’ll move faster when the army hits the ground
When you climb too high
Bite your lip when the bullets hit the sky
If they pierce the sea
Swim like fish when they chase you to the reef

If you think you’re sure
You’ll think again when there’s knocking at your door
When you feel the night
Don’t close your eyes you may never see the light again

Trouble on the ground
Take it to the sea
Trouble in the air
Take it to the trees

If you think you’re running now
You’ll move faster when the army hits the ground
When you climb too high
Bite your lip when the bullets hit the sky
If they pierce the sea
Swim like fish when they chase you to the reef

Trouble on the ground
Take it to the sea
Trouble in the air
Take it to the trees
